One of the advantages when you are a king, is being able to name cities after you. That's what happened after a fire raged through the city of Oslo in 1624. King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway ordered that the city were going to be rebuilt across the bay, near Akershus Castle, and called it the "new" Oslo, Christiania.
The name Oslo was retained for the now poor suburb where the original city was located. The city of Christiania grew rapidly and became Norway's largest city in 1850. Somewhat later the city was renamed Kristiania. At the turn of the century, many claimed that it was inappropriate for the city to bear the name of a former Danish king, and after years of debate, the original name Oslo was restored in 1925.
And why shouldn't we honor the city that is Norway's capital with a designated shoe model?
